Linda Blessing will host this annual fall potluck for members of both GMTA and the Foundation for the Promotion of Music. All members of GMTA and FPM are invited! Please bring a salad, casserole, side dish, or dessert. Water, soda, and wine will be provided. We are looking forward to a great evening as we share in our mission to provide performance and educational opportunities for the young musicians in our area. Book Review: Mindset - The New Psychology of Success

Linda Weltner will present a synopsis of the book Mindset - The New Psychology of Sucess by Stanford University psychologist Dr. Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., who explains why it is not just abilities and talent that bring success, but the mindset with which we approach goals that foster self-esteem and lead to accomplishment. Dweck reveals what great parents, teachers, CEOs and athletes already know: how to create a love of learning and a resilience that is the basis of great accomplishment in every area.

“The Works of Claudio Santoro”

Pablo Marquine, University of Florida graduate student of Dr. Hee Jung Kang, will present a program focused on Claudio Santoro's complete works for solo piano. Claudio Santoro (1919-1989) is a Brazilian composer born in Manaus, state of Amazonas, Brazil. He was a major composer, conductor, professor, and founder of the Music Department at University of Brasilia, and also founder of the Brasilia National Theater Orchestra. Santoro's musical works have an intrinsically compositional diversity that was underlined by the 20th century paradigm changes. His repertory consists of Preludes, Balada, Aleatory and other solo piano works.

"Versatile Piano Technique"

In this presentation, we will discuss common problems and solutions from a technical standpoint, with examples from the standard piano repertoire. Topics will include, but not be limited to, legato, finger independence, rhythm, and use of arms.
Jasmin Arakawa joined the music faculty at the University of Florida as Assistant Professor of Piano and Piano Area Coordinator in August 2017, having previously served on the faculty at the University of South Alabama and Western Illinois University. She is a prizewinner of the Jean Françaix International Music Competition and the Competition in the Performance of Music from Spain and Latin America. A graduate of Tokyo University of the Arts, she holds Doctor of Music and Master of Music degrees in Piano Performance from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where she studied with Emile Naoumoff, the last student of Nadia Boulanger.
