Ivory Menagerie--Then and Now

How does a composer capture the sound, movement, and temperament of an animal using the piano? This lecture-recital will take a closer look at three pairs of solo-piano works to illustrate the various techniques and effects that different composers have successfully incorporated to achieve this creative task. The presentation will hope to shed light on an area of piano literature that hasn't been fully explored and provide teachers with new and refreshing teaching and programming ideas.

Presenter: Evan Mitchell, Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of Florida 
Program: Methods to Motivate Students

Many piano teachers, especially those who operate independent studios, face the challenge of retaining students.  Students and their parents need to feel that there is measurable improvement throughout the year. We propose to present methods of successful and consistent improvement.  We will draw on educational literature in order to present methods for both short-term and long-term motivation. Join us and we discover how to turn students into 'perpetual motivation machines.'

Program: Re-engineering of hands at the piano: preventive alternatives for piano-related injuries.

One important job for any piano teacher is to keep his or her students safe from injury while playing the piano.  If a student practices faulty exercises, then injury may result instead of the desired goal of building a good technique. Miss Leyva directs an ongoing research project on the prevention of health related biomechanical issues of pianists and students. She will present ground breaking principles which have been shown to improve technique while avoiding injury.

Presenter: Shayna Stringer, Five Element Acupuncturist and herbalist in Gainesville, FL
Program: The basic theory behind the Five Phases and how this can incorporate into your life

Shayna will discuss the basic theory behind the Five Phases and how this can incorporate into your life. She will explore the subtle differences this model has compared to TCM, and will give a brief review of the functions of the 12 meridians in the body.

Presenter: Hee Jung Kang
Program: Tonal Balance and Voicing of Piano

Hee Jung Kang, DMA
After earning her Bachelor’s degree in Piano performance from Ewha Woman’s University in
Korea, Dr. Kang attended Northwestern University to further her education. She received her
Master of Music and Doctor of Music degree in piano performance from Northwestern
University, where she studied with Dr. David Kaiserman. She also attended the Gnesin Institute
of Music in Moscow, Russia and received a Piano Performance Certificate studying under
Arkady Sevidov, one of the top prize winners of the Tchaikovsky International competition.
While Dr. Kang attended the Gnesin Institute of Music, she was invited to perform as a guest
artist in a concert series.
Dr. Kang has distinguished herself as a concert soloist as well as a chamber musician with her
piano trio group. She performed with Northwestern University Philharmonia Orchestra as a
soloist by winning the concerto competition. Dr. Kang and her trio performed with
Northwestern Orchestra and had the honor of performing in the master classes of Nelita True,
Menahem Pressler, Peter Slovik, and Colorado Quartet. She also appeared regularly as a guest
artist in a concert series sponsored by the Korea Times and the Korea Central Times in Chicago.
In the past several years, she has been invited to perform with The Village Philharmonia
Symphony Orchestra and had numerous solo recitals in Florida. Dr. Kang is also known as a
renowned clinician, with her students winning numerous statewide competitions.

Presenter: Marina Veiler and Yury Orlov
Program: Viola and Piano Recital. 

​Yury Orlov, viola, and Marina Veiler, piano, family duo was established in 2009. Yury Orlov is a graduate of Moscow State Conservatory and the University of Northern Illinois. He has performed internationally as a soloist, chamber and orchestra musician. Marina Veiler is a graduate of Estonian Academy of Music, Toradze Piano Studio at the Indiana University, and University of Minnesota (DMA), and has performed in the US and abroad as a solo and chamber musician.
